Staff mark a huge milestone at family-run hotels

Nigel Carter, head chef at Palm Court, and Scott Barnes, hotel manager at Marine Lodge, have been with the family-run businesses – both run by brothers Jason and Nick Delf – for a combined total of 55 years.

The long service has seen them work for three generations of the same family, while building up a firm friendship of their own.

Both started at just 15 and 16 years old, with Nigel recently completing 30 years, and Scott, 25 years.

Owners of a Norfolk hotel were on tenterhooks as they broke open an old safe re-discovered during refurbishment work.

But rather than bundles of cash or priceless heirlooms, all they found was an old newspaper cutting from the summer of 1966 about the history of the 70-room Palm Court on Great Yarmouth’s seafront.

Typing a letter at his barracks in India on 17 September 1945, Joe Delf told his superiors the Imperial Hotel in Great Yarmouth had finally been derequisitioned by the military, exposing him to significant debts.
